The Real Christians

A poem I wrote for camp this year. It shows two perspectives within those who claim to be Christians. Guess which one is right?

They’re everywhere in the Bible-belt and beyond.
They make up half of our deacons and most of youth.
They decide what’s popular in the Christian domain
and rule over compromise.
Who are they?
They are the average “Christians.”

They’re hard to find anywhere, even in the Bible-belt.
They make up a few of our deacons and fewer of our youth.
They hold to what’s Biblical in the Christian domain
whether popular or “lame.”
Who are they?
They are the real Christians.

I am not committed to doing God’s will.
I do not intend to abstain from sexual immorality.
I have no desire to refrain from drugs
or other self-destructive habits.
Who am I?
I am the average “Christian.”

I am committed to pursuing God’s will.
I intend to keep myself pure from sexual immorality.
I desire to preserve my body from drugs
and other self-destructive habits.
Who am I?
I am the real Christian.

Those people are overly radical and extreme.
The Gospel can’t be nearly that clean.
I wish they’d stop slowing down our churches
and resisting cultural change.
So I ask,
“Can’t they be average Christians?”

So many are complacent and jaded to God.
Their Gospel is not half what it ought to be.
They’re killing our Church from inside out
and resisting Christ the Lord.
So I ask,
“Where are all the real Christians?”
