Owl City is probably my favorite music artist on the planet, though I do also love Casting Crowns and Chris Tomlin. There are several reasons for this. The first is that it simply fits my personality. Owl City songs are generally characterized by a light, fun, dreamy, and magical feel. That's how I love to think. "Fireflies" and "Meteor Shower," for example, make it feel like I'm surrounding by magical lights, fireflies, and tangible positivity. That's just awesome to me. Others are just fun or astounding. This is how I like my music.
Another important point is that Owl City songs are usually very positive and happy, if not for the whole song then at least by the end (I was going to mention some exceptions, but then I realized I couldn't think of any). I am a very happy person, so that suits me well. However, it's not just my personality that makes me like that. I personally believe that, as Christians, we should be generally happy people. Some people will disagree, saying that we need only be joyful, but I honestly believe that the distinction is often exaggerated. We are in love with the Perfect One. Since when are people not happy when they're in love? So, I love Owl City's happiness.
Owl City songs are also very innocent. I love innocence, and I believe that God loves innocence, as well. After all, that's how He created Adam and Eve before the Fall. You will never see sin or evil in any Owl City song, and that thrills me. There is not one Owl City in which I can find a fault for being less than totally innocent.
Wide-eyed wonder characterizes many Owl City songs, and I really believe that's how God likes us to look at His creation. When creation amazes us and astounds us, we give glory to God, and this is the attitude perpetuated by Adam Young in Owl City. If we looked at things through an Owl City perspective, I believe that God would be far more glorified than He usually is.
Finally, some of the songs either implicitly or explicitly declare Adam Young's faith in God. Songs like "Meteor Shower" and "Tidal Wave" hint at it, "Kamikaze" symbolizes it, and "Galaxies" explicity declares it. That's a huge plus to me.
And so, this is why I love Owl City. Do you agree? Comment on this post or shoot me an email. I love to find others who think like this.
